The Elevate Centre – Learning Pathways at Pine Rivers State High School

At Pine Rivers State High School, we believe that every student has the capacity to thrive when provided with the right opportunities, support, and challenge.

The Elevate Centre for Teaching and Learning Excellence is a dedicated space that brings this belief to life - offering tailored learning opportunities in a dynamic, small-group setting, while maintaining strong connections to the core curriculum and classroom learning.

Through the Elevate Centre, students may participate in one or more targeted programs designed to build confidence, boost academic achievement, and foster self-regulation and leadership. These programs are:

  • Integrate;
  • Accelerate; and
  • Cultivate.

What is the Elevate Centre?

The Elevate Centre is a high-impact, inclusive learning environment where:

  • Achievement standards in English and Mathematics are at the heart of learning;
  • Students build self-regulation, motivation, and engagement;
  • Data-informed, evidence-based teaching strategies guide all decisions; and
  • Belonging, wellbeing, and voice are prioritised alongside academic growth.

Elevate students remain part of their regular classes and routines - their participation is timetabled to ensure no disruption to their core English and Maths lessons. The Elevate Centre supports learning beyond the classroom, giving students additional tools to flourish.

Our Programs

Integrate – Multidisciplinary Study

“Making learning meaningful through real-world projects and cross-curricular connections."

Integrate allows students to engage in thematic, inquiry-based projects that combine elements of Humanities, Science, the Arts, and Technology, while still achieving progress in core English and Maths achievement standards. Students learn by doing - solving problems, creating presentations, building models, or designing community-focused projects.

Focus areas:

  • Academic rigour in English and Maths;
  • Inquiry and project-based learning;
  • Collaborative teamwork and communication; and
  • Growth in critical thinking and creativity.

How it works:

  • Replaces one subject in the timetable;
  • Students are assessed against core curriculum achievement standards;
  • Regular moderation with classroom teachers ensures consistency of judgments and high expectations.

Accelerate – Needs-Based Intervention

“Providing the right support, at the right time, for students to move forward with confidence."

Accelerate provides focused intervention in literacy and numeracy, using data from NAPLAN, classroom assessments, and PAT-R and PAT-M.

Small-group sessions support students in mastering key skills - while explicitly building confidence, self-belief, and learning strategies.

Focus areas:

  • Targeted support in reading comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency;
  • Numeracy intervention and problem-solving strategies;
  • Explicit teaching, guided practice, and collaborative learning; and
  • Self-monitoring using the “4-Self" model (Self-Evaluation, Self-Efficacy, Self-Observation, Self-Reaction).

How it works:

  • Replaces one subject in the timetable.
  • Led by trained staff using evidence-based literacy and numeracy strategies.

Cultivate – Leadership and Opportunity

“Building leadership, voice, and real-world connection through purposeful projects."

Cultivate takes place primarily on Wednesdays in period four (Character and Citizenship lesson), giving students the chance to extend their learning through community engagement, peer leadership, and authentic learning experiences.

Focus areas may include:

  • Peer mentoring and leadership development;
  • Student-led tutorials and presentations;
  • Community-based projects and school service initiatives

Purpose:

  • To foster student voice, independence, and connection with school and community; and
  • To build confidence and capability beyond the curriculum.

How Students Are Selected

Selection for Integrate and Accelerate is data-informed and student-centred, using:

  • Achievement trends (NAPLAN, PAT, academic levels of achievement and trends);
  • Teacher recommendations;
  • Student reflections and learning profiles.

Students self-nominate for Cultivate as this occurs during Wednesday period four – Character and Citizenship lesson.

Importantly, families are contacted and involved throughout the process.

Each student in Elevate sets personalised learning goals that support both academic progress and self-regulation, building ownership and motivation.

What Makes Elevate Different?

  • A high-expectation learning space;
  • A curriculum-aligned centre of excellence;
  • Not a permanent placement - students enter and exit based on goals met.

Elevate is guided by the principles of:

  • Differentiation and inclusion;
  • Clarity, depth, and breadth in curriculum;
  • Growth mindset and character strengths; and
  • Safe, supported, and academically focused learning.
