At Pine Rivers State High School, we believe in nurturing excellence, and that students who aspire to high performance are best suited to achieve when they are empowered in their chosen field.

This is embodied by our Programs of Excellence, which provide enrichment and extension through a high level of challenge and support, and develop students' whole identity. Students who participate in our Programs of Excellence:

  • Think and learn with depth (mastery of their chosen field) and breadth (mastery across many aspects of their  chosen field);
  • Learn from educators with rich experience in their Excellence field;
  • Curate a sense of belonging alongside like-minded peers;
  • Engage deeply with our school values of Perseverance, Integrity, Nurturing, and Excellence; and
  • Connect with industry and community experts.

Pine Rivers State High School offers the following Programs of Excellence:

Academic Excellence (Year 7)

  • Themed through Cognitions: Teaching and learning follows our PRSHS Instructional Model, gradually releasing responsibility from teachers to students to ensure confidence, clarity, and mastery. Students  develop depth of understanding of the cognitive processes that drive the Australian Curriculum and QCAA Syllabuses, elevating them to apply these cognitions in their classes and across multiple disciplines.
  • The Science of Learning: Students grow their understanding and appreciation of how adolescents gain and retain knowledge, harnessing the science of learning to become experts in the how, what, and why of learning to transfer knowledge across all aspects of their classroom and non-classroom lives.
  • Places of Learning: Academic Excellence is grounded in the informed practice, theory and research of Adolescent Success – the Australia-wide organisation dedicated to the development of young adolescents – and the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development). Students navigate flexible, democratic, safe, diverse, and engaging learning environments, and have agency in how and where they learn. In this way, they own the responsibility of acting and shaping their potential, rather than being acted-upon and shaped.
  • Inquiry-Based Learning: Academic Excellence is integrative, pastoral, innovative and challenging. By exercising the power of inquiry, students pursue their own curiosity and creativity, and approach learning as a continuous, active, and student-centred process.
  • Level Up Days: Learning culminates in frequent 'expos', where students showcase their thinking and learning to the real-world of community members and families, and celebrate each other's work. Level Up Days occur multiple times per year, and are in addition to regular classes in the student's timetable.

Musical Theatre and Production (Years 7-12)

  • Themed through Collaboration: Teaching and learning follows the PRSHS instructional model, gradually releasing responsibility from educators to students as confidence and mastery of skills in performance and production grow. Teamwork is an integral part of musical theatre and as such, students will explore the collaborative processes that underpin successful musical theatre through hands-on, performance and production focused training and experiences. Working together with student mentors alongside teachers will enable students to develop a sense of belonging within the school community, giving them the confidence to put their skills into practice within a range of performance and production opportunities across the program.
  • Foundations of Musical Theatre: Students build on their understanding and appreciation of how excellence in performance and production skills are developed and refined over time. Through guided practice, students develop and refine their skills in a variety of disciplines to become versatile performers.  Developmental training in musical theatre and production foundations will focus on skills in communication as vocal technique, movement and dance, acting, stagecraft, and production techniques. It will further skills in communication, discipline, creativity, and resilience and serve as a launchpad to build confident, passionate performers.
  • Industry and Professional Connections: Musical Production Excellence enables students to work in flexible, creative and purpose-driven learning environments such as rehearsal rooms, technical production areas and performance spaces. The program will also provide opportunities for students to explore professional performance venues through excursions to experience live musical theatre and professional performances. This will enable students to draw inspiration from professional practice and connect classroom learning to real-world artistic contexts.
  • Creative Practice: Students explore creative elements such as character, storytelling, movement and music. A knowledge and appreciation of the whole musical theatre world is extended further through exploring other key creative aspects of staging such as set and prop design, sound and lighting, costuming and stage makeup. This provides students the opportunity to also explore future Creative Industries related careers, beyond performing on the stage.
  • Intensive Workshop Days: Dedicated workshop days enable students to hone their skills alongside their mentors and fellow cast-members, collaborating intensively in preparing the school musical. These days occur in addition to regular classes and lead toward the culminating real-world outcome: Pine Rivers State High School's highly regarded annual musical production, where students showcase their learning, skill and teamwork to the wider community.

Sport Excellence - Touch Football, Volleyball (Years 7-12)

  • Themed through Skill and Team: Coaching and training follow our Instructional Model, gradually releasing responsibility from coaches to students as confidence and competence grow. Students develop technical skill and tactical understanding within a high-expectation team environment. Excellence is cultivated through consistent effort, coach feedback, and a commitment to personal and team growth.
  • The Practice of Performance: Students strengthen their understanding of how skills are developed and applied in competition. Training sessions focus on technique, game awareness, and decision-making under pressure. Reflection and coach guidance support students to refine their performance and contribute positively to their team.
  • Training and Competition: Sport Excellence provides structured training alongside regular interschool fixtures and tournament opportunities. Students apply their learning in authentic game settings, representing the school with sportsmanship and commitment. These experiences build resilience and a strong sense of belonging within their team.
  • The Student Athlete: Participation in Sport Excellence is a choice and a privilege. We believe in the concept of the student athlete, where being a student comes first. Ongoing involvement reflects a student's commitment to training, teamwork, effort, and positive behaviour in the classroom. Students develop time management, responsibility, and self-discipline as they balance academic learning with sporting ambition.
  • Growth and Pathways: Whether pursuing representative selection or striving for personal improvement, students are supported to set goals and work toward meaningful progress. Coaches provide guidance on development opportunities beyond school while keeping enjoyment and steady development at the centre of the program.
