Pine Rivers SHS BYOD Program

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) is a new pathway supporting the delivery of 21st century learning. It is a term used to describe a digital device ownership model where students can use their personally-owned mobile devices to access the department’s information and communication (ICT) network.

2018 marks the third year of BYOD at Pine Rivers SHS. All students are expected to have a Windows or Mac device that meets the minimum specifications listed below. Students subject choices should be considered when deciding what laptop and upgraded hardware components to buy.

Vendor Portals

Pine Rivers SHS has negotiated with several vendors to develop a range of devices and purchasing options for parents. Devices offered on these portals meet the schools' minimum specifications. Extended 3 year warranty and on-site repairs are packaged with some of the offered devices on the portals. The school does not endorse or recommend any particular brand of device and parents are free to purchase from any vendor of their choice.

Software installation, with the exception of software packages distributed by Pine Rivers SHS, is the responsibility of the student/parents. Valid licenses are required for all software present on your device. Pine Rivers SHS, in conjunction with Department of Education, Training and Employment (DETE) has negotiated a number of software deals for BYO devices, which students/parents can take advantage of.

Microsoft Office 365

All state school students from Prep–Year 12 can download multiple free copies of the Microsoft Office 2016 Suite to their personal home and mobile computer equipment. Students will need to use their Managed Internet Service (MIS) login, school email account and password.

Windows Defender Antivirus

Windows Defender comes built-in to Windows 8 & 10, and automatically scans programs you open, downloads new definitions from Windows Update, and provides an interface you can use for in-depth scans. Best of all, it doesn’t slow down your system, and mostly stays out of your way—which we can’t say about most other antivirus programs.
