Synopsis
Synopsis The Outsiders is the story of two rival teenage gangs. The Greasers are the poor white trash of a small American Midwest town, born on the wrong side of the tracks. The rivals the Socs are the upper class members of the town, rich, spoilt and conceited.
Through a series of incidents and misadventures the teenagers realise that their worlds are not so divided. Their problems are universal, they both have the same fears, dreams and aspirations.
Unfortunately it takes the death of a member of each gang through different circumstances for them to realise that they all watch the same sunset. The themes of this musical are as relevant to todays youth as they were when this story was set in the late 50s. As Ponyboy says in the script: nothing gold can stay. The expressionistic urban set is a representation of the lives of the youth at risk in our society. The relationships they have with adults and other peers are an important thermometer of how we gauge the values of our society. Its important that we stay gold if we hope to tackle these important issues.
Pine Rivers will be the first Queensland school to perform the authors rewrite which is very exciting. Darryl Chute has been faithful to the original novel by S. E. Hinton and his catchy tunes and powerful dialogue make this a show to be enjoyed by all ages.
